Buying a helmet used to be a question of fit first and then reputation of the manufacturer next. With the introduction of the SHARP scheme there is now a mechanism of rating the safety aspect of helmets (similar to the NCAP rating for cars). Not all helmets have been tested yet as the scheme has only recently begun but more are appearing on the list as time goes by. Click on SHARP to get the rating for your helmet.
Irrespective of the safety rating of the helmet the fit is the most crucial aspect. The helmet should be tight without being uncomfortable and should not move around on you head. It doesn’t matter if you go for a full face or open face helmet: get it fitted properly. In an accident a decent, properly fitting helmet could save your life. A poorly fitting one could help end it!
