The new motorcycle test (April 09 onwards)
As from 27th April 2009 the practical test will be a 2 part test.

The new practical test will have 2 elements:

  • Firstly you will need to perform a number of manouvers on a dedicated off road site. This is designed to prove that you have sufficient control over the bike and will involve high speed avoidance and braking. The test will take approximately 10 minutes to conduct and will take place at a dedicated test centre.
  • Secondly, and only if you pass the first part of the test, there is a road ride. This is broadly similar to the old practical test and will be conducted at your existing local test centre.

Click on the diagram to see a PDF of the new off-road site plan. This can be either left hand or right hand depending on the centre. Even though it is off-road you are expected to act as if it is on the road so don't forget those observations.

Our nearest test centres are in Silverstone and Oxford. Should you fail the part 1 you need to leave at least 3 clear working days before re-applying so we will need to allow a week or more in between booking your part 1 and part 2 in case you fail the part 1 and need to re-take.

The number of manouevers you will be expected to complete has increased significantly and whilst you are in an off road area you can fail you test by not doing lifesavers between the parking are and the test area!
